I don't know; I would have to do tests.
My conclusion based on that screenshot alone would be that if your armour is undyed, the hero loads the base colour (which is a sort of brown for rits) instead of grey dye, but I can't really make a conclusion on that screenshot alone.

1) You get a warning and have to type that character's name to delete.
2) Yes you hae to remove the old char to update it, adding it as new.
3) No, as it won't allow you to add mercs with same name.
4) Yes, that's what I tested here: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/b...t10472170.html
5) I rolled a new character with a different prof, the merc was unaffected.

The current lack of runes is understandable since that's how heroes are too and you can spec them specifically.
But the costume bit is highly recommended, but will also be a pain to code. It's already a hassle to change armors for heroes, imagine if you had a merc hero that you have 16 armors on. Way too much effort for the small Live team to spend that sort of time on. Much easier for you to pick your favorite armor and roll with it. Plus I'd expect you'd get bored of changing armor looks for your merc hero within a week of playing.

They could do the following for runes/weapons.
Current weapon/rune set is copied over to merc. Weapon/Offhand/Runes are flagged as Customized to the merc so can only be used on that merc or replaced with other items you may choose to use, such as better weapon or a rune upgrade/downgrade. Similar to a PvP character creation set of armor in some ways.
"Superior Rune of Vitality
(Customized to Jobob Snotgoblin - Merc)"
They could do the following for merc looks.
Add in a "update looks" button. You would need to log in the character the merc was created off of (same name/class), put on the look you wanted, talk to the merc npc and hit the button. New snapshot of look is then updated onto the current merc. Done!

I will bet that the allowance to have unregulated (till 7) of a certain proffession of hero will prove over time to be an advantage in certain circumstances. Hence they will be selling an advantage and at a hefty price at that.

If someone spends the time/coin to get 3-4 new necromancers to waste their mercenary hero slots on, good for them. Good for Anet for opening up that possibility and profiting off of it twice. I personally will pass on these mercenary hero slots. While I'd like to bring my warrior along for shits and grins on any of my other characters, I don't think that experience is worth $10-$45. But if this means Anet makes GW2 the most awesomest game in the history of MMO, so be it. I'll buy it, after I get tired of Battlefield 3.

only the idea is nice...i have at least 3 reasons not to use Mercenaries:
1) they are too expensive
2) they can't use PvE skills, so they are nothing more a regularl hero
3) some might say you can run 8 necro party discordway, i say it's one of the reasons i will never buy them. I hate this lamer builds

Sorry for the late response to this post, I only just spotted.
Dual accounting doesnt require playing two characters at once. You log out with your second character, and your main character keeps the extra heroes that follow around like henchmen.
I've done everything in UW with dual accounting except for 4H. I will definitely be trying to complete all of UW with a 7 hero party sometime soon

I dont consider them too expensive for a game that has provided me with so much entertainment over many years and yet still been a lot cheaper over the time I played than WoW would have been.
I paid for the full 8 mercenary team because I want to support Anet and Guild Wars, and this update is exactly what I wanted in this game.

This makes the insane price of the storage panes seem a little less insane. Holy crap!
Even with a 50% off sale to make the price a little less insane, it would still pretty expensive for what it is. Congrats to all of you that constantly shout "I'd pay for X!" every time you want to see a new feature implemented. You got your wish! Can't wait to see what else they decide to add to the cash shop in the future! *rolls eyes*
I can go to almost any store and buy the Guild Wars trilogy plus Eye of the North for LESS than what they are asking for 8 mercenaries. WTF?! The price of something like this should not be higher than the cost of the damn game. I also find it a little disturbing that they have decided to sell things in the online store that will obviously give people an advantage over others. I was cool with utility and cosmetic items being sold, but this is definitely not a path I wanted to see this game go down.
$45 is half a cell phone or cable bill! It could also buy a new game! I would gladly fork over that much money for the ability to slay monsters in a new land. To select 8 of my characters to use as heroes in a 6 year old game? Hell no!
What is wrong with adding NPCs that allow us to unlock costumes and new features for a fee? I would hand over a bunch of ectos in exchange for this stuff.

I couldn't agree more. The philosophy of adding reward through gameplay really doesn't apply anymore. It goes straight to cashshop at outrageous prices. Feels like this goes against what Guildwars was all about...Highly dissapointed on this one.
I'm not against the cashshop as a whole, but it has become a popular recourse to things that can and SHOULD be added and rewarded through gameplay. For example: Reward players with a token for vanquishing endgame ereas/dungeons for 1 or .5 of a mercernary. This was a perfect opportunity missed imo.

They should turn every henchman in the game into a hero. This would maintain the cosmetic only benefit of the mercenary update while also allowing everyone else to have 7 necromancer, monk or ranger parties.
Mhenlo and company are going to feel lonley now. Turn them all into heroes and there is no gameplay advantage.
It doesn't change anything gameplay wise because players can have any party composition they want if they are willing to buy it (and the PvP character delete trick means you only need one spare character slot to do it), at least this way everyone else can do it without throwing their credit cards at them.

Yeah, this pricing is a little too far I think. I am never gonna buy 1 slot for $10...WTF?
I would consider the 3 slot one if it were like $10....Id dare say I would even go for $15 if I felt happy that day.
And never would I ever pay $45 for something that for me at least, will be a purely cosmetic change... I mean seriously?? Why wouldnt I just buy a whole new game, Would get me a lot more than some new armor and look on 8 heroes....
FFS this is crazy lol

I guess I have a different outlook on it. Many games have recently gone to FTP/Cash store like EQ2 and LoTro.. difference being you DO have to make cash purchases to ungimp the supposedly "free" character.
This game is free to play.. all of it. There is no cash store for enhanced spells, I don't have to buy the right to pick up a fabled or legendary loot or equip it, I don't have to buy the right to enter an instance. I don't have to buy the right to type in chat. I don't have to buy the right to have more than a plat.
It is fluff. Im fine with that. Im also fine with shelling out money to keep THIS game alive..GW2 is an unknown still. As long as this game generates income it stays up.
I have purchased a lot of store items.. and spent far less overall than the cost spent on subscription games.

This. I actually suggested this a few times and I believe I was laughed down with the idea being seen as ridiculous and pointless, a "poor use of ArenaNet's time."
Along with seven heroes.
And now, well... now it's here.

This is what a lot of people dont understand.
Your not paying $10 for a slot. Your paying $10 to keep the game alive AND getting an extra slot as a bonus.
GW without any doubt still is the CHEAPEST MMO you can get. Even truly FTP games like DDO, Lotro and Maple Story require you to pay a lot more money than GW costs to actually get in game content or advantages to make you capable of actually playing the content they provide. GW is NOTHING like that, all the stuff in the cash shop is purely optional and visual only. If you dont want it, then dont buy it. If you want this game and its future franchise to stay alive so you can carry on playing and enjoying it and any sequels, then you actually should be buying the stuff.
MMOs are not cheap to run. You cant just pay once and expect the game to be running for 5+ years. What you can do however is pay once, but let other people make the optional purchases for purely visual only content, and then whine about how expensive the items are while your playing the game without paying anymore at the expense of people who choose to buy the completely optional costumes, extra storage, and mercenary slots.
To explain it in another way, I didnt pay £30 for 8 mercenary slots. I paid £30 because I actually felt like this whole update with 7 heroes was worth that much with how much extra enjoyment I will get from it. I wanted to support that decision and the game that I have actually had the most enjoyment from over the last 5 years.

What Bhavv said.
I bought a fair amount of stuff from the online store and don't regret it at all. I would buy back my account and then buy mercenary slots if I could.
